We will be staying in the village of Les Houches, a lovely, traditional alpine village situated at the entrance of the Chamonix Valley. This quieter French ski resort is excellent for families and boasts the largest single ski area in the valley offering 50km of ski runs suitable for beginner and intermediate skiers.
All Mango guests will be given a Carte d`hote, a card that entitles you to travel free of charge on the local Chamonix Bus network (excluding the night bus) and also on the train between Servoz and Vallorcine. The local Chamonix bus network services the entire Chamonix Valley from the village of Servoz to the village of Le Tour. It also provides access to all the different lift areas.
On purchasing the Les Houches lift pass you gain access to delightful, meandering forest pistes - 4 green, 6 blue, 12 red, 2 black and the Kandahar world cup downhill run on " La Verde des Houches". The highest skiing of the resort is at an altitude of 1,860m from where you have spectacular 360° views of Mont-Blanc. Les Houches is proud of its delightful family run mountain cafes and restaurants, offering some of the tastiest lunches and wines to be had in the valley.
Les Houches is a great place to learn to ski, especially for children, while there is also lots of interest for intermediate and advanced skiers. Those with very young children (ages 3 to 5) can book them in with the French ski school to be well looked after in the Jardin des Neiges! (A snow garden equipped with lots of amusing activities and games, inflatables, models, statues, a giant caterpillar, two nursery lifts with specialised instructors, allowing your children to learn as they play.)
There is also a small snow park we can visit if we don't want to spend all day on the mountain. Here there is a small drag lift and one side of the lift is for skiing and the other side for sledges.
For those that would like to ski the whole of the Chamonix valley the higher priced "Mont-Blanc Unlimited ski pass" can be purchased allowing you to ski; Brévent/Flégère, The Grands Montets, The Balme area (border with Switzerland) and in Courmayeur (Italy).
Après ski in Les Houches is ideal for our Mango group, very relaxed with a handful of bars and cafes and our hotel provides a very relaxing ambience with several lounges, pool table and a bar. In search of more? Then travel 6 miles through the valley where you reach the livelier resort of Chamonix offering activities such as bowling, swimming and ice skating. The Chamonix Valley offers easy access to everything and everyone whatever your tastes.
We will be staying half board in the French ski lodge, Les Campanules. Situated a few minutes drive from the centre of Les Houches the hotel provides a complimentary shuttle bus to the slopes or village centre. The accommodation has 51 rooms offering twin, triple and quad accommodation all with private facilities, satellite TV, free Wifi and telephone. Choose from a tranquil forest view room or, for a supplement, a dramatic view of the Mont Blanc mountain range with private balcony.
Although not yet Star-rated, we rate this hotel 3 star. For comparison, the food and accommodation here is superior to our Romania ski lodge and the 2 star Hotel Europe, on the French Pyrenees ski trip and equivalent (but entirely different) to the 4 star Rila hotel, used for our Bulgaria ski trip.
After a long day on the slopes, relax in front of the welcoming fire in the cosy hotel bar or in the upstairs lounge with pool table. The restaurant is very flexible offering a buffet breakfast in the morning and for our evening meal traditional French cuisine, and will cater for our Mango group offering a child friendly menu for the children. The food is superb and is served in the delightful dining room looking out onto the mountains and the valley.
Mango Holiday Fun
The trip will be accompanied by a Mango co-ordinator who will organise the group`s collection of ski equipment and liaise with the ski instructors. The co-ordinator will suggest a venue to meet for lunch and later will arrange to meet before dinner. Over dinner there will be a chance for us to exchange our days' experiences on the slopes. After dinner the hotel has a bar and several areas for socialising and has a pool table.
Mango Holidays sometimes referred to as MangoKids run holidays for single parents with their children. Small families with just one or two children are often penalised by the big tour operators who charge for two adults. Mango is the only tour operator to offer a discount to these small families for all children up to the age of 16 travelling with just one adult. Going on a Mango Holiday is an opportunity for single parents to meet other single parents and many single parents become friends and stay in touch after their holiday. Mango is not a single parent dating organisation. If you are interested in single parent dating you should check out our links page, which recommends a few organisations helping single parents meet. Being single with kids can be a daunting experience but it can be fun and we have designed a programme of holidays and weekend breaks for solo travellers with children to make sure they have some fun. Our solo holidays for single parents with children consist of adventure and activity breaks, ski holidays and holidays in the sun. Mango single parent holidays take place in the UK and overseas. In the UK we have holidays in Devon, Brecon Beacons and Pembrokeshire and we have a Christmas Party weekend in Warwickshire at the end of November. Mango holidays for single parent families overseas travel to Mallorca, Malta, Cyprus, Jersey, Morocco and Lapland to see Santa.
